Various biomaterials have been developed yet proved to be far from ideal for cartilage tissue engineering. In this study we introduced a new scaffold, bioceramics, to generate cartilage replacement. Beta-TCP porous ceramics seeded with sheep chondrocytes were implanted subcutaneously in a nude mice model and in sheep articular cartilage defects. Significant neocartilage formation was seen 3 and 6 months post-implantation as demonstrated in macro/microscopic observations. This study strongly encourages application of porous bioceramics as scaffold in cartilage tissue engineering.
