A continuous carbon fibre/silicon carbide matrix composite material has been produced by a low-cost manufacturing process. According to this process, the space between a 2D carbon fibre preform is filled with a SiC powder by a pressure infiltration method. High particle packing densities are achieved within the fibre preform in this way. The compact body is heat treated to form a porous framework, which is then infiltrated with a liquid pre-ceramic polymer or liquid carbon resin. Subsequently the infiltrated polymer/resin is pyrolysed in argon at a temperature of 1000-1300°C. The densification degree, microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of the composite material are characterised. The developed C{sub}SiC composites are considered to be a promising material for low-temperature applications (seals, brake systems).
