Modeling software applications have been applied to solving problems in the waste and recycling industry that deal with large amounts of information and require significant industry expertise. This paper overviews the experiences of local governments using modeling applications in collection vehicle routing with geographic information system (GIS) software, full cost accounting with activity based costing software, and business recycling promotions with an Internet application. Three case studies are presented from the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio. In each case, the technology complements the industry expertise and neither one could adequately solve the problem alone.
