Investigations of equalizing, bypassing, and vitalizing applied on VRLA batteries

One of the objectives within the project of 'Distributed Battery Management System' was the investigation of aspects like equalizing, bypassing, and vitalizing of VRLA batteries. More specifically questions like 'how to achieve these functions by introduction of electronic circuitry on individual cell or block' and 'what are the possible benefits for the VRLA batteries' had to be answered. This investigation was an essential step to decide integration of these functionalities for each individual element or block, managed by the central embedded controller. This paper will present the results of investigations executed on bulk of batteries which were used within an industrial application. The effect of bypassing is measured with different parameters like frequency, duty cycle, and currents. Vitalizing was performed with electronic circuitry with different parameters placed on the batteries from the same bulk. The obtained results were compared with a reference battery which was not submitted towards vitalization. The results shows that it is possible to integrate the different functionalities with only one electronic circuitry and that the central embedded controller easily can switch between functionalities for each individual cell or block. The obtained measurements shows that vitalizing has an significant effect on the provided batteries.
