Solid Waste Management is a burning issue that has caused environmental degradation especially in urban localities. The city disposal system is an integrated waste management plan. The key elements of solid waste management are three Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycled) and primary environmental care that will make a zero land filing goal in the long term. The dumping site should be environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially acceptable. The traditional approach or conventional method of selecting dumping sites has no well defined methodology. The Remote Sensing & GIS technology provides an opportunity to integrate the resources and analysis to make effective scientific decision. The study area of Saharanpur city is the third largest dense populated city of Uttar Pradesh, India and more prosperous industrial city. The objective of the study was to study the potential application of RS & GIS technology to find-out the site suitability area for solid waste disposal in Saharanpur City, India. With the visual and digital interpretation and analysis, fieldwork is carried out to identify the suitable dumping site. According to the given different parameters and local knowledge the minimum required distances were considered to create buffer zones. The large area is under agriculture than other classification which was second priority after vacant land for dumping site selection. But the result has shown that the agriculture land has been selected as a highly suitable. IRS-IC: LISS III & PAN merged satellite data has been used to identify the suitable land for dumping site. ERDAS Imagine, Arc/Info, Arc View software were used for rectification & database creation and analysis work.
