Space art has been able to show the majesty of space science and engineering in a way that words cannot describe. This paper will show examples of space art's role in shaping the research and public perception of American space initiatives since the late 19th century. Space art programs started in the last fifty years, such as the NASA Space Art Program and International Association of Astronomical Artists, have encouraged the production and preservation of space-related art. Space art has worked to document United States' history but has also worked as a tool to help develop the United States' space program by showing technological and scientific artistry of space technology in an inspiring manner for the public and future generations of NASA leaders.
