In this paper, a method for detecting imbalance in a rotary mechanism for a micro-scale machining process is presented. A linear regression model of the spindle unbalance degree in ultra-precision diamond turning process is proposed. The suitability of a single-input/single-output model is assessed directly, using vibration signals measured on an ultra-precision lathe. The model input is the harmonics power ratio related to the spindle vibration. The nanometric displacement of the rotation axis caused by this vibration is then estimated, according with the proposed method. Harmonics due to unbalance on the spindle are detected using a harmonics sequence detection algorithm, that is applied to the vibration spectral data. Brief explanation of the diamond turning process and problems caused by vibrations generated due to the imbalance of the spindle, are also presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is corroborated in different situations.
