The Kaili Formation was first named by Lu (1963). Due to its richness in trilobite diversity and correlation utility, the Kaili Formation has been recognized as one of the most important Cambrian sections in South China. Recently, the Kaili Formation was proposed (Zhao et al., 2001a, 2001b) as one of the potential sections for a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP). However, the type section has been re-measured several times and the thickness reports disagree (see Table 1). A better understanding of the formation is essential, including a modern description of the type locality. The goal of this paper is to describe the original section described by Lu (1963) and re-study the faunal assemblage at the type section. The investigation was conducted during the summer of 2002, and a preliminary report is summarized here.
