This paper will define digital convergence. It will also define interoperability and outline barriers to interoperability, with consequent costs. It will then describe a business model showing how value can be reaped from digital convergence, and will relate this to collaborative advantage in the marine industry. It will also relate such convergence to the adjacent mechanical, plant and building industries. The paper will then go into detail about the interoperability infrastructure required to support digital convergence, and will conclude with examples of beneficial interoperability in the marine and plant industries.
