A method, a tool and a practical example for life cycle cost calculation is presented. It shows the opportunity to compare different technologies and business cases to select the most beneficial ones. Especially highly complex technologies with a lot of influencing parameters on the system life cycle can be evaluated by Life Cycle Cost Calculations (L3C). A supporting tool enables the user to change L3C model parameters and to generate alternative solutions in an easy way. The practical example bases on ballast water treatment management which is required by IMO (International Maritime Organisation) for all vessels in the future. Life cycle costs of ballast water management systems are influenced by a lot of different factors.
