The GS/GOGAT cycle plays an important role in nitrogen assimilation in higher plants. In order to clarify this role, the GS and GOGAT gene expressions response to nitrogen were compared between two rice varieties with distinct difference in nitrogen accumulation. The nitrogen high accumulation variety GD4 exhibited a higher expression of GS and GOGAT genes in roots as compared with the low accumulation variety Nanguang in low nitrogen and nitrogen-starved condition. The GS gene OsGLN1;1 and GOGAT gene OsGLTl were both down-regulated by ammonium. There was a reciprocal function for these two genes in nitrogen assimilation.
