Towards fertilizer recommendations for phosphorus based on 0.01 M CaCl_2

Fertilizer recommendations are generally based on the correlation between soil test results and crop yield or nutrient uptake. With the increasing awareness (and legislation) that the excessive use of fertilization leads to environmental problems, there is a growing need to further optimize fertilizer recommendations, especially for P. In The Netherlands fertilizer recommendations have been established based on two different extraction methods for phosphorus (P): an ammonium lactate- acetic acid extraction (PAL) and a water extraction (Pw). For several reasons, it has been suggested that 0.01 M CaG_2 would be a good basis for fertilizer recommendations. To implement this "new" extraction method, a fertilizer recommendation must be obtained based onthe new soil test results. The cheapest and quickest way is to correlate the old with the new soil test results. This is, however, not possible due to a lack of correlation between P-CaCl_2 and PAL and it introduces a large error in the translation of P-CaCl_2 to Pw. Following the general approach of correlating soil test results to crop yield and nutrient uptake, the literature shows a wide range in correlation coefficients. This variation can be explained only if the processes behind this correlationare taken into account - the mechanistic approach. To arrive at a generally applicable fertilizer recommendation, there is thus a need to obtain a better insight in the relation between P-CaCl_2 and the dominant processes involved in translocation of P from soil particles to the plant and the corresponding reaction rates.
