A water soluble catalyst has been developed and evaluated for use in two component waterborne urethane applications. The use of typical urethane catalysts in waterborne applications presents many challenges. The catalysts are not normally soluble in aqueous systems, and most are known to be susceptible to hydrolysis. This new water soluble catalyst overcomes these problems. Use of this new catalyst in two component waterborne urethane coating systems resulted in faster drying times and more robust development of film properties. This new catalyst enhanced reactivity even under high humidity conditions, without causing film defects. The curing profiles and film performance properties of two component waterborne urethane formulations utilizing this new catalyst were compared to formulations containing standard catalysts under normal and high humidity conditions. Shelf lives and pot lives were also compared.
