A new and advanced mesoscale NMM (Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model) was run within a framework of PC based weather forecasting and modeling system, FReSHc. For example, a weather forecast developed with FReSH for 72 hours for an area 600 km by 600 km with a grid size of 4 km by 4 km can be performed on a single processor Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz) computer within three hours. As a result, FReSH has been coupled with the U.S.EPA CALMET/CALPUFF air dispersion modeling system to improve wind field estimations for air dispersion modelling. This study investigates the coupled system using several case studies. The system is validated through a comparison of hourly wind data measured using a well sited automatic meteorological station and predictions made with the FReSH system. Case studies are used to investigate the effect of CALMET initializations. In addition to coupling the meteorological forecast system to the CALMET/CALPUFF air dispersion modelling system, the forecast meteorology was also used to drive the U.S.EPA’s ISCST3 air dispersion model.
