MERMAID and ODESA are two freely available facilities for validation and development of marine biooptical algorithms for MERIS and the future ESA optical sensors on board Sentinel 3. MERMAID is a database of biooptical match-ups, i.e. concurrent in-situ and Earth- Observation data, developed in collaboration with Principal Investigators protected by a strict data ownership policy. It is continuously updated and currently comprises more than 30 sites or missions worldwide. A long-term effort is made to ensure reliable source of data, including a detailed documentation of the protocols, sanity and quality checks of the datasets and further processings to best match the satellite data. The match-up facility initiated in 2007 is currently evolving to handle other sensors and products. In parallel, ODESA is a complete Level 2 processing environment comprising today the source code of the ESA 3rd MERIS reprocessing for algorithm development. The software provides a MERMAID processing mode, offering biooptical modellers an immediate validation of new algorithms against data of known quality and in a perfectly controlled configuration.
