FTICR-MS offers an outstanding combination of mass accuracy, resolution, and sensitivity. These attributes result from ion image current detection and have stimulated significant growth in the applications of FTICR-MS in recent years. In general, the longer an invariant cyclotron frequency can be detected, the greater the resolving power, mass accuracy, and sensitivity. Homogenous, high strength magnetic fields are critical to FTICR-MS performance. However, electric fields generated by the ions and applied potentials can contribute in significant ways to the achievable time-domain duration and performance of FTICR-MS. This presentation highlights our recent results that show increased timedomain signal duration, removal of space-charge induced frequency shifts and improved FTICR-MS mass accuracy and sensitivity.
