Spray measurements for alternative aviation fuels with Phase Doppler Anemometry (duel-PDPA) are presented. The major objective of this work is to perform measurements of spray characteristics such as droplet size, velocities, and spray cone angles for candidate jet fuels for operating conditions corresponding to lean blowout (LBO). A hybrid air-blast fuel injector is used in measurements and the spray cone angles are investigated using high speed imaging. Three fuels selected by the NJFCP program on the basis of chemistry (A-2, C-1, and C-5) are selected for the measurements and spray characteristics are investigated. The droplet sizes and velocities measured at LBO conditions are presented and compared. The effects of the fuel flow rate and the pressure drop across the injector swirler assembly on the spray characteristics are discussed.
