2D TURBULENT JET STUDY BASED ON FLUENT

The commercial CFD software FLUENT was introduced to study the flow charac-teristics of 2D vertical turbulent jet which was under the defined water depth and stagnant environ-ment. The VOF method based on FLUENT was adopted to trace the free surface. Cases with different jet velocity and pipeline length were studied. The analysis of the entire flow filed distribution showed that the free surface had little influence to the initial jet discharge region where the velocity retained the self-similar properties. When the jet achieved the free surface, the centerline velocity decreased rapidly and the flow was deflected by the surface. The fitted curve of the centerline velocity decay law was agreement with the theory curve which obtained by Chen & Rodi in 1980, but there was a lit-tle bit different about the range of variable. Because of the impact of the symmetrical vortex, jet ve-locity would have a peak in the jet exit. Compared to the free turbulent jet, cases with different types of riser were set to simulate the confined jet which was much closer to the reality project. A confme-ment index α=Hr/(Dr-D) was proposed to categorize the confined jet. It was found that the jet ap-pears instability characteristic when 1.67 ≤α≤5. For α≥7.5, the jet was highly confined and there was no ambient water entered the riser. For α≤1.15, the confinement has little or no effect to the jet.
