Novel flame retardants have been developed by the chemical modification of natural materials, such as clays, proteins, and cellulose. The modification procedures and component ratios in flame retardant mixtures were optimized by visually observing evidence of intumescence and conducting microcombustioncalorimetry experiments. The mixtures were used to form either a flame retarding coating for foams or a char producing network in melt-blended polystyrene composites. Thermal behavior and flammability of the treated polymers were examined. Factors contributing to the durability, efficacy, and intumescence of the treated polymers will be discussed.
