Energy release measurements of lithium ion 18650 cells at failure were made in a bomb calorimeter under nitrogen to preclude oxidation of the cell contents. The measured total energy release is the sum of the electrochemical (free) energy and the chemical energy released by mixing, reaction and thermal decomposition of the cell components at failure. These two energies were comparable at low states of charge.
