Very often plastics manufacturers utilize scratch and mar additives to reduce the occurrence of surface defects. The efficacy and performance of these anti-scratch additives may vary based upon the composition and type of the resin. In this study, the effect of elastomer and filler content of the TPO resin was investigated in relationship to scratch and mar additive SM1 (Ciba Irgasurf SR 100). It was found that at 19-30% elastomer content, the effect of SM1 on increasing the impact strength is maximized and in some cases could exceed the 50% mark. Consequently, the scratch resistance at this particular range was also found to be optimized. Fillers such talc are known to affect negatively the scratch resistance of TPOs based upon their increasing content, typically in the range of 20-30%. The substantially increased scratch resistance of the resin at this range due to the presence of SM1 will be discussed herein.
