Supported liquid membrane (SLM)-based pervaporation is a potential technique for butanol/water separation because it is energy-efficient as SLMs exhibit exceptionally high selectivity and mass flux [1]. However, the insufficient stability of the SLMs severely limits its practical applicability. Liquid membrane (LM) loss during pervaporation can reduce the mass flux and selectivity, and under severe condition cause LM contamination of the feed solution [2-4]. Several stability improvement efforts had been evaluated [1], but most of them are complicated and impractical. Blendinq of LMs is a simple and potential alternative, wherein a known extractant is mixed with a stabilizing diluent. Currently, studies on SLM blends for pervaporative butanol recovery which addresses SLM stability enhancement are rarely reported. In this study, a stable SLM with oleyl alcohol (OA) as the main extractant and a polysiloxane as the stabilizina diluent was developed and employed for the pervaporative recovery of n-butanol from aqueous solutions and model acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation broth.
