Energy consumption is an important factor for the ecological impact and operation cost of modem machine tools. Assessment of the energy consumption based on models and usage profiles and optimal selection of design alternatives, as well as energy consumption optimising control, are promising approaches to unleash potential savings while maintaining operational flexibility. In our paper we present results from the project ECOMATION including energy consumption analysis based on the foreseen application of a machine, control strategies that lead directly to energy savings, and control techniques and mechatronic and control co-design solutions that improve energy efficiency indirectly.
