The Alternative Energy Institute at West Texas A&M University has tested over 75 wind turbines since 1976 up to present day. AEI has also been involved in wind data collection and analysis throughout the State of Texas The history of AEI is to be explored from a technical viewpoint. Technology can be a useful tool or it can impede work when it becomes outdated. How often should data collection technology be revisited and replaced? AEI was recently required to move and rebuild its wind test center. This allowed an opportunity for us to reexamine all technical aspects of our existing test center at that time. Rebuilding made us look at 30 years of testing experience and lessons learned. Many ideas based on this experience are detailed in the report including spacing of turbines, data communications, SWCC requirements, and planning for future growth.
