The apparent growth speed of mycelia, the weight loss of substrates and the variation of mycelial respiration were observed when A. auricula-judae was cultured on sawdust substrates. The aim of this study was to investigate the regularity of mycelial growth and substrate consumption as well as their relationship during the stage of mycelial growth and post-maturation, which would contribute to establishment of detection method for mycelial growth. The results showed that the variation regularity of growth rate, the weight loss and the respiration corresponded with culture stage closely. In the stage of mycelial growth, weight loss of substrates and emissions of CO2 respectively reached 55. 3% and 58. 4% of the total amount, while in the later stage of mycelial post-maturation, the rate of weight loss dropped and the value of respiration decreased to 30% of its peak value. The results indicated that the variation regularity of the growth rate, the weight loss and the respiration value could reflect the state of mycelial growth and substrate consumption during the stage of mycelial growth and post-maturation, and the variation of mycelial respiration could be used timely to monitor the mycelial growth activity in culture substrate.
