摘要

Thin film intumescent coating is currently attracting a great deal of attention towards the fire protection of structural steel in commercial buildings because of its effective passive fire protection.Both water and solvent borne thin film intumescent coatings are typically used for cellulosic fire protection whereas thick or mastic epoxy coatings are employed for hydrocarbon fire protection.The thickness of coating is a main decisive factor to improve the insulating ability or to enhance the fire resistance period of intumescent coating.However,an excessive increase in the thickness of coating can adversely affect its performance.This paper will address the importance of coating thickness of the waterborne thin film intumescent coatings on steel plate using programmable high temperature furnace as per ISO 834.The role of primer and topcoat as an intumescent coating system on the fire resistance performance are also covered.Key words: intumescent coating; waterborne,thermal insulation; structural steel; coating thickness; primer; topcoat.
