Global Cultural Considerations of Animal Ethics

There is wide variation in attitudes to animals. Within cultures and countries, there are differences in ethical approaches, concepts of welfare and stakeholder involvement. Between countries, there are differences with historical and social origins,for example the degree of industrialisation and urbanisation. Between continents, there are deeper differences, for example the different emphasis placed on animal welfare versus animal killing in Asian countries compared with Europe. Between cultures, including religious cultures, there is variation with effects on attitudes and on practices affecting animal welfare, sometimes positive and sometimes negative. It is important to stress the need for sensitivity in dealing with these issues, but many or most religions have traditions or laws requiring humane treatment of animals. Much progress has therefore been made by accentuating positive areas of agreement and achieving cooperation in measures to improve welfare, including elimination of worst practices.
