Although Indonesia is the third-largest global producer of rice, it is uncertain whether Indonesia can keep its rice self-sufficiency rate at 100%. Indonesia's population is predicted to increase further in the future. Therefore, it is very important to know the current situation of paddy rice cultivation and improve the accuracy of agricultural statistics. This study examined the spatial distribution characteristics of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values obtained using temporal MODIS data to create a paddy field map in Java Island. As a result, the rice field area extracted using the MODIS image classification was 3,856,562 ha, and that extracted using the existing land-use map was 3,575,245 ha. By visually interpreting the high resolution satellite images obtained through the Landsat, ALOS, and GeoEye-1, the rice field area in Java Island finally was determined to be 3,679,070 ha in total. This value was 443,537 ha larger than the rice-field area of 3,235,533 ha officially announced by Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
