Innovation in Construction Techniques on Earth versus Space: Similarities and Differences

Construction is one of the oldest professions in human civilization. The construction industry has evolved through enormous changes since the beginning and with the rapid advancement in technologies, innovation in construction techniques has skyrocketed in recent years. On the other hand, extra-terrestrial construction is in its infancy. While construction of human habitat in space can benefit from the experience on earth, space construction faces new challenges that do not apply to construction as we conventionally know today. This paper, focusing on human safety aspect of construction, (ⅰ) identifies and classifies different construction techniques based on their utilities in earth and space, (ⅱ) pin-points the similarities and differences in requirements as it pertains to construction on earth and space, and (ⅲ) provides insight on how innovators in construction techniques on earth and space can learn from each other. The paper will discuss the role that the current construction industry can play in space construction and explores the factors that might hinder the level of participation. The findings will be valuable for both construction industry personnel as well as researchers working on extra-terrestrial human habitat. The paper will also help to outline the skill and innovation gap between earth and space construction and provide suggestions to fill the void to seamlessly transfer knowledge between the two.
