Tank container transportation, a kind of ‘door-to-door’ service, is one ofmarine transportation types. However, tank containers are forbidden tocarry liquefied natural gas(LNG) according to some certain marine lawsbecause of the uncertain safety concerns of carrying LNG within tankcontainers. In this paper, an experimental scheme was proposed to testthe evaporation characteristics of LNG in the tank container. A singlefreedomsimulator was constructed and used to simulate the motion of aprototype 40ft tank container during shipping. Both static and dynamicboil-off gas (BOG) flow was measured. The results show that the motionof the tank container has effect on dynamic evaporation and with theincrease of severity of the conditions the BOG flow presents a unimodalcurve. Moreover, the more severely the container sways, the lower theevaporate rate approaches, which indicates a longer storage time of anairtight tank container during shipping.
