We propose to operate a Nd:YAG laser at the secondary emission line of 1319 nm and Raman shift in H/sub 2/ to the first Stokes at 2918 nm near the maximum of water absorption. The quantum efficiency is 45 % and energy conversion of 25 % is achievable in practice. A 300 mJ Nd:YAG laser at 1.32 /spl mu/m will produce 75 mJ near 2.92 /spl mu/m and this will be sufficient for corneal sculpting. Such a system has advantages in terms of cost of manufacturing and maintenance compared to excimer lasers.
