Expandable Sand Screen (ESS) was deployed successfully asrna sand control device in two horizontal openhole completionsrnin two geologically different offshore fields in Brunei. Arncritical success factor was the choice of a drill-in-fluid (DIF)rnthat maintained hole stability and gave a near-gauge holernduring running and expansion of the ESS. Field experiencernand extensive research led to the choice of a synthetic-basedrnDIF for one well but a water-based DIF for the other well.rnChallenges unique to the deployment of ESS in these wells arerndiscussed.
