摘要

A water resource management plan for a golf course community has encompassed two elements not commonly used for water supply. This "Total Water Management" (TWM) strategy uses both water resources and reclaimed water in a unified approach. The first element of this evaluation uses controlled salt water intrusion from the Currituck Sound, resulting in a brackish water flux. The second element uses reclaimed water for golf course irrigation to augment aquifer recharge. The Currituck Outer Banks is a barrier island between the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The project site is a golf course development located on the sound side of the barrier island. The only water supply available for conventional development is the water table aquifer. Salt water intrusion is considered to limit growth; however, this hydrogeologic evaluation documents that further growth can be accommodated by using controlled salt water intrusion. The project well field is adjacent to the Currituck Sound rather than the groundwater divide in order to induce salt water intrusion (expected less than 2000 milligrams per liter total dissolved solids). The use of reclaimed water on the golf course completes the Total Water Management Strategy, by incorporating treated waste water into water resource planning. MODFLOW simulations document the relationship of non-discharge reuse of reclaimed water to withdrawal. A withdrawal of 670,000 gallons per day is recharged by rainfall, brackish water intrusion and reclaimed water. Advanced treatment technologies using desalinization and tertiary treatment for water reuse make this Total Water Management strategy possible.
