INFLUENCE OF MINOR ELEMENTS ON PROPERTIES OF PURE FE-C-SI CAST IRON

Using pure Fe-C-Si alloys, we evaluated the influence of minor elements such as Ti, N, P and S on the microstructure and the tensile properties of cast iron. The pure Fe-C-Si samples were prepared from electrolytic iron, semiconductor grade silicon and electrode graphite. As for the standard, we prepared the commercial grade cast iron (abbreviated to C. G. iron). The experimental results are as follows; 1) The graphite morphology of the pure Fe-C-Si irons is straight, thin and long but changes to curved, branched, thick and short on S addition. The graphite morphology of the C.G. iron is much more curved, thick and short than the S-added Fe-C-Si irons. 2) The as cast matrix structure of the pure samples is fully pearlite, but there is a small amount of ferrite in the matrix of the C.G. iron. 3) The C.G. samples are superior in tensile properties to the pure Fe-C-Si samples not only the annealed material but also the as cast samples. These results show that the minor elements, such as S and Ti, improve the tensile properties by modification of the graphite morphology.
