Catalytic combustion is an effective way to stabilise lean combustion and to achieve low NO_x emissions. However, the technology is essentially limited to low power density applications (<< 300 kW/m~2) because of the insufficient durability of the precious metal catalysts, platinum and palladium, above 900°C. Hexaaluminate, perovskite or spinel oxides which have good thermal resistance and durability are candidate high temperature combustion catalysts, but their activity is insufficient below 1,000°C. Burner design can compensate for that gap in suitable catalytic activities. A staged catalytic burner with a durable high temperature hexaaluminate catalyst is described that permits the flameless catalytic combustion of natural gas to be initiated and sustained, raising hopes for the wider commercial development of catalytic combustion.
