Sulfur dioxide (SO_2) in flue gases is a major contributor to the acidification of our ecosystem. Removing SO_2 and converting it into useful products in an economically viable way are important and challenging tasks. Elemental sulfur is a desirable by-product for some SO_2 producers, particularly those located in remote areas, since it is easier to handle and transport. We developed a Na_2S-based two-step process which is capable of removing 99% SO_2 and producing elemental sulfur of high purity. In this process, H_2S is generated as an intermediate; elemental sulfur is then produced by reacting H_2S with SO_2 via the Claus reaction. One of the drawbacks of the process however is the use of the Clans plant which is often capital-intensive. Recently, our experiments on redox reactions in the Na_2S-SO_2 system show that it is possible to fix sulfur dioxide as elemental sulfur in a single step, i.e. without a Claus plant. In this paper, the existing SP-FGD technologies are reviewed. The single-step SP-FGD process is introduced following the discussion on the behavior of the Na_2S-SO_2 system at low temperatures, Finally. future research needs are presented.
