Summarized briefly here are the results of investigations that have led to the discovery of several metal-containing additives that can cause the reductive crosslinking of PVC chains. Owing to this capability, these additives are potential smoke suppressants and fire retardants for the polymer. Because they are essentially nonacidic, they do not have the great disadvantage of promoting char cracking, unlike the conventional PVC smoke suppressants that are commercially used. The reductive crosslinking agents include the divalent formates or oxalates of late transition metlas, simple halides of Cu(I), and various Cu(I) complexes containing phosphites or other ligands. Discussed here in detail are the special advantages of copper-containing additives, especially the favorable environmental characteristics of these materials.
