This paper takes a look at the future of Europe's high speed rail network and the challenges of achieving an integrated system. The key issues associated with harmonising infrastructure, rolling stock, operations and personnel factors are allconsidered. An insight is given to some of the recent developments to redress the incompatibilities that have evolved between Europe's national railway systems. But there are considerable costs involved. Can we really have a truly integrated European High Speed Rail System? If so at what cost and in what time scale?
