摘要

Riparian ecosystems in western North America are highly diverse. The wide range of rivers, stream gradients, elevations, and climatic extremes results in riparian heterogeneity. However, similarities in structure and function also result in levels of homogeneity among western riparian systems that allow cross-regional transfer of research findings. Uniformity is represented by cottonwood (Populus), which is common throughout most of western North America. Regional aridity makes most western riparian systems, especially in lower elevations, narrow bands of phreatophytic plant communities along water courses, dependent on supplemental water from alluvial groundwater. As disturbance systems, western riparian communities respond to the highly variable hydrological regimes found throughout the region, such as snowmelt floods and ice in the north, flashy, storm-induced floods in the Southwest, and extended droughts. Most native and non-native riparian plants are adapted to these wide fluctuations, as recruitment is often timed to, or stimulated by, disturbance events. Alterations of regional and local hydrology and land uses, such as reduction of flood magnitudes and modification of watershed vegetation cover, have greatly changed the dynamics of western riparian systems, resulting in decline of ecosystem integrity and functions, and in identification of riparian ecosystems along many western rivers as threatened or endangered.
