The numerical process simulation based on the Finite Element Method enables the creation of fundamental process knowledge for warm forming. Beside the research activities in the range of deformation and flow characteristics of workpieces the loadcase of the forming tool should be examined. Furthermore, effects of recrystallisation to the forming process will be considered. Beside making available the material constants for the numerical simulation also measures need to be inquired in order to enlarge the capability of warm forming processes. Low forming forces, wide possibility of forming and low die loads are the advantages of typical warm forming processes in comparison to conventional cold forging. In addition to these high dimensional accuracies, shape accuracies, better surface qualities can be achieved by warm forming compared to the hot forging process. Consequently, the process is suitable for manufacturing of Near-Net-Shape components. By reduction of the cutting complexity manufacturing costs can be diminished definitely after the forming process. Therefore, a characteristic application, e.g. the lateral extrusion process, will be used for testing the different shaft-shaped workpieces with overhanging form elements. These experiments will be conducted for the verification of the simulation results. As a primary aim of the research activities, guiding principles for industrial application will be set up by the means of the FE simulations and experiments.
