Compiler construction stands out as an extremely successful area of computer science. Compiling is a well understood and well researched area. Many students who have taken a course in compiler construction agree that it was one of the most enjoyable courses during their time in school. Part of the thrill of constructing compilers for students is the sense that they have produced a piece of software that closely resembles real programs (as opposed to the toy programs they have written during most of their undergrad degree). The feeling that their compiler can 'compete' with commercial products adds to their satisfaction. We describe some of our experiences with using Java as both the source language as well as the implementation language for writing a compiler. These experiences are based on a semester long 4th year course at the University of British Columbia.
