Integrated Coastal Area Management is one of the most powerful instruments of sustainable development. In the last decade, management of the coastal area in Slovenia has moved from a sectoral approach, defined mostly by central government, to a more integrated approach, following the subsidiarity principle and the principle of decentralisation. The new regional structural policy, harmonised with the EU requirements, together with the guidelines within the National Environmental Action Plan, enabled the establishment of Development Agency for the Coast-Karst Region, which is supposed to play a crucial role in future development of the Coastal Area in Slovenia.
