Present paper intends to review experiences on characteristics of firbre reinforced polymers (FRP) for civil engineering applications and to discuss design considerations by applying FRP bars or tendons embedded in concrete as prestressed or non-prestressed reinforcement. Test results on FRP indicate high tensile strength, high fatigue strength as well as low relaxation and creep, however, due to lower transverse strength special anchoring devices can be needed. On the other hand, special attention has to be taken against brittle failure due to the linear elastic behaviour of FRP. Design of FRP reinforced or prestressed members can be based on the conventional way of design of reinforced concrete members, however, special considerations are needed to bond, cracking, deflection, minimum cover, minimum reinforcement, thermal effect, ductility and failure mode.
