We investigated the impact of hydrophobic (MLIPO) and hydrophilic (MHYDRO) monomer additives on surface properties of UV-cured hybrid organic-inorganic thin coatings. Transparent coatings were obtained by UV-curing mixtures of a commercial hexanediol silica diacrylate (Dp= 50 nm, SiO2= 50%) mixed with different amounts of the above monomers. Surface energy measurements showed that hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface properties are both controlled by the amount of additives and by SiO2 loadings. We also found by a staining and cleaning procedure that the hybrid hydrophilic coatings resist very well to dirt pick-up and to oil staining while the hydrophobic coatings exhibit excellent water-repellency and easy-to-clean properties. The colloidal silica also contributed significantly to resistance to abrasion without affecting gloss and transparency.
