Self-lubricating bronze bearings, while state of the art 45 years ago, have definite limitations to their environmental suitability. This was discovered at the Priest Rapids Dam spillway, where ammonium compounds derived from bird droppings caused stress corrosion cracking of a susceptible alloy in the trunnion bearings. Even though the bearings performed quite well for 45 years the owner decided to replace the failing bronze material with new technology synthetic materials. The trunnion thrust washer and bushing replacement project is scheduled for completion in 2005. Because the project schedule was set up to rehab the most severely damaged trunnions first, by March 2003 almost all the cracked thrust washers will be replaced. The District believes the new trunnion bushing and thrust washer materials will prove to be at least as trouble free as the original installation. In addition, the new materials should have a lower coefficient of friction, thus decreasing the stresses in the arms. What remains to be proven is the new Orkot~(~R) synthetic material's long-term durability in this application.
