Direct Templating of Self Organizing Materials: Synthesis and Characterization

The self-assembly and characterization of nanoscale materials, from particles to rods, have been well documented in recent years. The level of order derived in these materials gives rise to some unique properties that are still being investigated. The next step in the evolution of these systems is to move from self-assembly to directed self-assembly. By directing the self-assembly of materials, a second degree of order is introduced that can be utilized to further enhance properties that evolve from small scale confinement. In this work, directly templated patterns of magnetic and photonic nanospheres and rods were fabricated using Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN). The methods of characterizing these surfaces and the properties revealed will be fully discussed.
