Modification of Nanofiltration Membranes by Ion Implantation

A surface modification technique, ion implantation, was applied to commercially available nanofiltration membranes in order to increase the effective charge. The surface charge of a thin film composite (TFC) membrane; NF90 was modified by implanting fluoride ions (F{sup}-) with ion doses of 1×10{sup}10 and 5×10{sup}10 atoms/cm{sup}2. Permeation experiments of a mixture of 5mM KCl + 5mM NaNO{sub}3 were carried out at a pressure and temperature of 100psi and 25°C respectively, in a dead end high-pressure filtration cell using the modified and unmodified membranes. Experimental results showed a decrease in permeate flux and an increase in rejection with increasing ion dose from the unmodified to modified membranes.
