In the development of a true triaxial tester a new uniaxial tester is built. This tester is unique and interesting since it can deform a powder sample both stress and strain controlled. Most current testers are strain controlled or pseudo stress controlled. With pseudo stress control the stress path is defined, but the stress is applied by deformation (strain). The stress path is followed by feed back control using a load cell. It is believed that there is a difference between stress and strain control, especially with fast phenomena like stick-slip. A pseudo stress control might not be able to keep up with fast phenomena. The new tester is able to show the difference between stress and strain control in powder flow. The results will be used in the development of stress strain relations for powder deformation.
