Frequency and Wavelet Analysis of Electrochemical Noise from Aluminum Alloy 1100 in Chloride Environment

Electrochemical Noise (EN) includes the spontaneous fluctuations of the potential of a freely corroding metal with respect to its surrounding electrolyte. The fluctuations reflect random spatial and temporal separation between the anodic and cathodic processes inherent to the electrochemical character of corrosion. In recent years EN has been increasingly used as an indicator of the presence and rate of corrosion. However, EN is a novel monitoring technique still under development and reliable EN signal analysis methods to identify specific corrosion processes and rates are still being sought. Wavelet analysis of EN is a promising approach to that end. The phase plane plot obtained from the coefficients of the wavelet transforms has revealed promising results for identifying noise transients. The corrosion events coincide with high intensity regions in the phase plane plot. We also investigated the ability of quantitative measures based on the phase plane plots to correlate with the observed corrosion behavior.
