FTIR-ATR spectroscopy has been used to inspect the diffusion of acetonitrile in two rubbery and one glassy polymers. The same technique has also been used to measure simultaneously polymer dilation during sorption. The solubility and diffusivity results have been compared to the values obtained separately through a gravimetric apparatus, while dilation has been compared to independent measurements performed through the use of a CCD camera. Two thermodynamic models suitable to describe rubbery and glassy systems, respectively, have been considered to verify the possibility to predict the volume dilation of the polymer matrix during sorption, starting from solubility data.
